I have only done 1 fly cruise and it wasn’t a bad experience at all.
The only thing I seemed to struggle with was the strict weight limit for luggage, when boarding at port I haven’t had a problem where the weight has been raised to me.
I was worried as I am an over packer. I’d rather have too much then not enough clothes etc.
I didn’t need to pay anything additional when I got to Gatwick and checked my bag in however, when I received it in Malta airport it was branded with a reflective ‘heavy’ sticker on it.

If you don’t want to risk hitting he Bay of Biscay at the wrong time then flying allows you to miss this, it also means you hit the tropical weather that isn’t England straight away. Otherwise you would have a day or two at sea before arriving in a hot country.
You will need to sort out parking yourself, even if you are on the cruise for 7 nights it doesn’t cover parking like a Southampton cruises do. I done a park and ride which wasn’t too far from the airport, the bus stopped near the main entrance. If you want to travel in peace and luxury then you will need to buy the priority security, lounge etc. These do not come with the booking.
A trick you will need to do is wear warm clothes until you land at your destination, and then change into shorts when you arrive. I was freezing on the flight there and back, I even asked to buy a blanket to keep myself as warm as I could.

Transport from the airport to the ship was included in the price and had very spacious busses. If you have a late flight on the first day, you wont get time to explore the port however, you will have a late flight going back which, gave us plenty of time to explore before heading to the ship to go home.
Overall fly cruises are perfect if you don’t like o risk the temperament of the Bay of Biscay and you don’t want the first day or two at sea to be nippy. The flights are chartered so if there’s a delay, the ship will wait for you. Regional airports are offered in London airports are too far.
The perfect start to a holiday in the sun all year round.
