Get to know Norway!

When we think of a holiday we often think of somewhere warm and sunny. Especially at winter when we are craving that Vitamin D. A summer getaway is always welcome in the harsh British winter however, there is another way to relax and enjoy the winter abroad.

A cruise to Norway isn’t your normal cruise getaway however, it offers a completely different way to experience the winter season. Norwegians know the tricks to enjoy the winter, with once in a life time excursions to offer, from snowboarding, husky sledging, hiking up mountains to viewing the northern lights. You can finish the day sitting by a log fire with a hot drink, surrounded by spectacular views before heading back onboard.

To enjoy your experience you’ll need to wrap up warm, make sure you have a waterproof coat as well. In Norway they use the word Hygge which means Cozy and Contented mood. It is a word in Danish and Norwegian evoked by comfort and conviviality. This word is used amongst any country that has long, dark winters. They are experts at it.

Obviously they need to eat, so food plays a massive role. Their food has been the talking point in the last few years, you must try what they have on their menus. Kjøttkaker are Norway’s meatballs which are delicious, seasoned with ginger, nutmeg and other warm spices, they melt in your mouth. Other things which i was surprised about, was the amount of fish and sea food they have in their cafes. Apparently it is the best food in the winter. Norway is also known for their waffles “vafler“, made with sourdough and served with sour cream and jam, it makes a delicious waffle sandwich.

You’ll need something to wash all that food down, luckily craft beer is huge in Norway. The national drink is called Akvavit, which is a potato-based spirit flavoured with herbs, to make this perfect to warm you up. If you prefer mulled wine then try Glögg, with dried almonds and raisins, its the perfect drink to sit by the fire wrapped in a blanket.

If you are staying overnight or departing late, sign up to a sightseeing drive in Tromsø, you will have the chance to enjoy a music recital in one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, the Arctic Cathedral. You may get a glimpse of the Northern lights too.

Being active and enjoying the fresh air is the perfect way to make most of the season. Skiing and Water sports, are two of the most popular sports to pass the time. Norway is credited around the world for creating alpine skiing. Cross country being widely popular both on pavement and forest trails, with locals enjoying the sport just as much as skiing downhill. Its not bikes you have to look out for like in London or Cambridge. If you want to experience deep in the countryside where your feet cant take you then sign up to the snowmobile safaris.

Norway also offers an uneatable experience sight-seeing by reindeers or dog sled. P&O offers this as an excursion so, all you need to do is turn up and soak in the breath taking views. The Alta Husky Adventure offers not just the memorable ride, but a chance to warm up around a log fire in a Sami tent also known as Lavvu whilst served refreshments.

When someone mentions Norway, you instantly think of the Northern Lights or the scenery. The Northern Lights are more commonly viewed from September to April. There is multiple ports that allow you to view the Aurora Borealis such as Stavanger, Tromsø, and Alta. You can also book a shore excursion to allow you the best chance to view these vibrant colours.

Norway has plenty to see, from waterfalls to the glaciers on mountain peaks, you will be left inspired by the views. Friendly locals who will do anything, to give you a true authentic experience of what Norway has to offer. The chance to shop with stunning mountains around you, even rain cant put a damper on your experience. You will leave begging for more and planning your next trip.
