If you have never been to Norway before, you might find it hard to know what to pack. Being limited to weight, you don’t want to take anything unnecessary, or leave something important behind.
When I went to the Norwegian Fjords in September 2023, I packed blind. I didn’t know anyone who has been before, so what I packed was just from instinct and hope.
With so many possibilities when going on a cruise that it is impossible to pack your whole wardrobe. I mean that would be a lot easier right? Norway can be unpredictable with its weather, and if you are going to simply catch a tan… you might want to go to the Mediterranean instead.

A base to start would be your essentials as well as, if you have booked any excursions to read what they suggest to wear. If you are going all out in an evening, you don’t need to worry about being cold. The ship is well heated and lovely and warm, however if you do want to go outside then it is suggested to bring a warm formal jacket.
Being ashore it doesn’t really matter about the weather, if wearing the right clothing. I packed thick coats and ample amount of layers as, that’s what I thought would be right. However, I soon came to realise I was wrong and could of saved myself the trouble of trying to squeeze everything into my suitcase.
Make sure you pack a waterproof coat (can be warm but not too thick), as you will be doing lots of walking, you do warm up pretty quick. You don’t have to worry about carrying a big thick coat around with you all day. Shops also have their heating on so, you wont be cold in the shops either.
Packing waterproof trousers as well, ensures you comfort and warmth without feeling heavy. Like your coat, you will be doing some walking to which you soon warm up, however there is no worse feeling then being stuck in wind and rain whilst your trousers are wet.

Shoes, now these should be a given. No sandals, flip flops, sliders or crocks (especially in sport mode). You will have some flat paths but if hiking or climbing up the stunning mountains, there is uneven terrain. Having shoes that fit well, are comfy and prove support on your ankles and souls, enhances your experience. Especially if it is raining, you don’t want to worry about stepping into puddles.
Hats, gloves and scarfs are a possibility, you will just need to make sure you can fit them in your back pack, or pockets. Another must is nice thick thermal socks, you can buy these in the shops or bring them from home. If you want that additional heat to keep you warm then hand warms are great. They are small and you can place them in your gloves, pockets and other areas to ensure your ultimate comfort.
On board you will have the chance to take a dip in the Jacuzzis as well as the pools, so bringing your swim wear is an option. I mean, where else can you relax in a hot tub whilst sailing the breath taking Fjords?
All in all, whatever you pack shouldn’t put a damper on your overall experience seeing the Fjords. With stunning views in every direction, you’ll be truly mesmerized. Hopefully this has helped in regards to knowing where to start packing, and what if beneficial to a Norwegian Fjords holiday. I will be packing these items when i had back to the Fjords in May 2024.
