Winter getaway on Azura

25th January 2025 – 1st February 2025

I have just come back from a gorgeous sunny getaway whilst cruising around the canary islands. Below is what I got up too.

I travelled with my mum as we needed some well deserved girls time, whilst sunbathing in 20+ degrees. We started with catching a flight from Gatwick to Tenerife airport, the whole transition from check in to landing was smooth and effortless. After check in, we were swiftly onboard and inside our cabin.

We enjoyed some entertainment and the facilities onboard before heading down for dinner. Last year we met an amazing couple called Liam and Lynne who were from Liverpool. Throughout the year we kept in contact with each other and they decided to join our cruise again this year! It was so nice to see them again and catch up at dinner.

The ship set sail and we partied the night away, ready to relax on our first sea day. Myself and mum booked a spa package whilst onboard – a 50 minute massage and a weeks access to the thermal spa. This worked out cheaper than booking them separately or at home. It was CELEBRATION night, so it was time to get glammed up and ready for the captains welcome.

Before sunrise we had arrived in beautiful Madeira. I’ve been here so many times and I still cant get over the views. It was time for our first excursion, which was the famous Cable car and Taboggan before finishing with some Madeira wine tasting. After we went for a stroll around the city on our own, before jumping back onto the ship. It was SILENT disco time!!

Another sea day had arrived to which we had a lay in, whilst admiring the North Atlantic Ocean which surrounded us. We had lots of fun around the pool and in the spa before getting ready for our last CELEBRATION night.

Our second port of call was Gran Canaria where we had a hike around Bandama Caldera, which is a volcanic crater. We were given a hiking stick each to help us as, it is steep in some areas with some uneven ground also. The views were absolutely mesmerizing! As we trekked around the crater, it was extremely windy and very tiring (if a dog can do it then so can I… Right?). The views and experience really made up for it. Mum did struggle but she managed to keep up and get to the end of the hike. I am always so incredibly proud of her.

It was a short drive to a stunning winery, where we got to taste some lovely, locally made wine. Of course I brought some. We then took a taxi to the old part of the city before visiting the local beach ‘Playa De Las Canteras’. The sun went in so we started the short walk back to the ship.

The third port was the windy land of Lanzarote where we had out final excursion. We took a bus ride to the Timanfaya National Park which is entirely made up of volcanic soil. I was baffled by how the soil 2 inches deep is so hot it can cook chicken! The most exciting part was next… we were about to ride some camels. They very well cared for and even have a day off every two days! I was sad to leave them! To end the excursion we had one final wine tasting and it was SO GOOD. The view again just leaves you in awe.

The last port we docked into was Tenerife before we had to head home. After breakfast in the buffet, we decided to take a leisurely stroll through the city center before falling into a Zara. As it was lunchtime we made a pit stop in a small café and sat outside. We ordered a big pint of beer for only 2 euro… YES, you read that right. Liam and Lynne heard about the cheap beer and joined us for a couple hours. We then took our time walking back to the ship for a relaxed afternoon in and around the pool.

It was our last night with everyone at dinner, our last super if you will. We said goodbye to our waiters followed by a lovely evening full of entertainment and hiding ducks around the ship. We placed our luggage outside the cabin so they were ready to be collected in the night. It was a very hard goodbye this time as we aren’t sure they will be on the cruise next year! 😦

As it was disembarkation day mum was quite nervous, so after breakfast I dropped my bag off in the theatre and popped outside for one last walk in Tenerife. After an hour and a half walk, I decided to stop off at the same café we had those cheap beers the day before for a sandwich and drink which cost me under 4 euros. Two men decided to sit down on my table and after a few minutes of conversing, I had finished my food and headed back to the ship. I was reunited with mum and we headed down to the meeting point ready to be taken to the airport.

I said goodbye to my friend Lee and endured the 50 minutes it took to get to the airport. We paid for the lounge access which we only spent 5 minutes in before heading to the gate. The flight was then slightly delayed due to two people not turning up resulting in their bags being taken off. It wasn’t long until we arrived back at Gatwick, collected our luggage and was shortly on the train on our way back home. It is freezing!!

Escaping the cold and being in the sun is definitely recommended. I have booked next years already! The holiday was spectacular with some amazing people onboard, although it is another holiday over, plenty more memories were created.
