For anyone that has never been on a cruise before, you would think the toilets onboard are the same as those in your home. This isn’t the case. Cruise ship toilets work on a vacuum system as it reduces the water needed by 90%.
If you block your toilet onboard then you are not the only person who will be affected. The cabin toilets are connected causing the cabins in your section will be blocked and flooded with only smells you can imagine.
Unless you have been on a cruise before you might not know what to do or what not to do to avoid any blockages.

Be prepared of the noise!
The toilets make a very loud *Whoosh* noise, this is normal. This can be a shock to children or new cruisers. It took my niece a few days to be able to flush the toilet herself. She use to flush and run!
Don’t panic as it is completely normal for the vacuum system.

Always close the lid!
Putting the toilet lid down isn’t only good for sanitation purposes, it also helps the vacuum process too. Most toilets onboard ships only flush when the toilet lid is down. It can also muffle the noise for those who flush and run!

Be generous with the flush button!
By continuously pressing the flush button you might trigger a fault making the system think there is a blockage or error. Be mindful on older ships there could be a delay once the flush button is pressed. If you notice a fault in the flush system then call maintenance, they are very quick to respond and if they find any issue which is unfixable you may get moved to a different cabin. Remember you are on holiday!

Watch what you put down the toilet!
Toilets on board are more sensitive than the ones you have at home. Only cruise provided toilet paper and human waste should be placed down the toilet. Even if you buy wipes which are labeled “flushable”. There are special bags and bins in the bathrooms to dispose any other toilet products in.
The reason is because anything other will block the vacuum lines which impact the nearby cabins. Crew have found strange items such as towels, clothing etc.

Treating toilets with responsibility then you shouldn’t have any issues. When I was on my solo Norway trip someone blocked a toilet which caused flooding in other cabins as well as an awful smell in the atrium. I have never experienced an issue.
