Barcelona Getaway

I have just come back from the most amazing four nights in Barcelona, and for a change, it wasn’t a cruise! So, buckle in.

I decided to bite the bullet and try my very first solo land holiday to the Barcelona Grand Prix, and it did not disappoint. I flew from Luton Airport on 11th June, and the airport was extremely easy to navigate. The flight was so short that I barely realised I was in the air before it was time to land.

After collecting my luggage, I had to find my transfer shuttle, which I had pre-booked with From2. It cost just £35 (€41/$46.31) for both pick-up and drop-off. I left the terminal building and walked across to the other side, which only took a minute. After a short wait for my driver, I was in my own minibus and on the way to the hotel.

Check-in was quick and easy, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I stayed at Hotel Catalonia Park Putxet. Knowing that you could take food into the circuit, I walked five minutes to a local supermarket to buy snacks and water for the next few days. It only cost €22 (£19.06/$25.23). I knew I’d need an early night, so I watched the first half of the football with dinner and a glass of wine before heading to bed.

The next morning was the day I was slightly apprehensive about. I knew getting from my hotel to the circuit would be a bit of a journey, but I hadn’t anticipated it being so confusing—or getting completely lost!

I started by walking seven minutes to my local metro station, El Putxet. After a few stops, I got off at Plaça de Catalunya, and that’s where things became a little confusing.

I asked a member of staff for help, and they advised me to walk a few minutes to another station. Once I arrived, I tried to find the ticket machine because I knew I wanted the T2 Integrated ticket, which would cover me for the entire weekend on the metro and train. It turned out to be much harder than I expected.

Thankfully, I spotted two people wearing Ferrari merchandise, and I was so happy to see other Formula One fans. I even joked that at least I knew I’d come on the right weekend!

We quickly realised we were all trying to get to the same place. Soon, we found another Ferrari fan and a Red Bull fan. We went to the ticket counter together, asked for the T2 Integrated ticket, and thankfully got exactly what we needed. We then worked out that we had to take a train to Barcelona-El Clot before changing for another train to Montmeló.

We laughed about how lost we all were and decided to travel to the circuit together. Little did I know that this would turn out to be fate, and the weekend would be filled with laughter, unforgettable memories, and friendships.

Robert and Jaap (who we nicknamed Max) were also in General Admission, so we stayed together throughout the first day, surviving on slightly dodgy meat from Gate 6 and plenty of beer! Annette (Netty) and Tony had grandstand seats, so we walked them as far as we could before saying goodbye.

After practice, we all met up again and reflected on our first day. We got on so well that we agreed to meet again the following day.

The journey back followed the same route, although we somehow managed to get off at the wrong station. Rather than trying to work it out again, I grabbed an Uber back to my hotel for just €10 (£8.66/$11.47). It was so easy that I ended up doing the same every evening.

Saturday was Qualifying Day, and once again it was incredible. While waiting in the shuttle queue, we met even more people who ended up joining our little group: Thiago, who was also travelling solo, and a father-and-daughter duo, Claudia and Strato.

Once again, everyone got along brilliantly. After a few more beers while waiting for the train queues to die down, we headed back to our hotels after another fantastic day.

Then it was finally here…

Race Day!

We created a group chat so we could all meet at Montmeló station before walking to the circuit together. Once inside, we split up depending on where we were sitting.

As it was incredibly hot, Robert, Jaap and I stayed together in General Admission, and I was so grateful we did. Without Robert’s umbrella, I would have been burnt to a crisp! Watching Lando get 3rd just topped the weekend off.

The race itself was amazing. We chatted with the people around us before everyone left the circuit at different times. As planned, we met back at the train station to wait for the huge queues to disappear. And we met even more amazing people.

Because it was our final night together, none of us wanted the weekend to end. We found a local pub near Barcelona-El Clot station and enjoyed a few drinks together before heading across the road to a kebab shop for one last meal.

Travelling home was just as straightforward as arriving in Barcelona. My airport transfer was waiting outside the hotel, and the journey was made even more enjoyable by our driver, who had great music playing while giving us a little tour on the way to the airport.

By complete coincidence, I bumped into Robert and Jaap once again, so we stayed together until it was time for them to board their flight. Then it was finally time for our last goodbye before I arrived back in the cold and rainy weather at Luton.

Overall, my experience was outstanding. I have never felt so at home with a group of people I’d only just met while travelling abroad. They made me feel completely comfortable, and at no point did I feel like I was on my own or hindering their experience.

I genuinely believe I made friends for life—something I never expected when I booked this holiday.

This trip reminded me that whether you’re travelling by sea or by air, it’s the people you meet along the way who often make the journey unforgettable.

No matter how long someone is in your life, they can leave a lasting impact.

I would highly recommend travelling solo, whether it’s for a weekend away or a longer adventure. I would do this holiday all over again, and I know that Annette, Tony, Robert, Jaap, Thiago, Claudia and Strato played a huge part in making it so special.

I honestly can’t wait for my next solo adventure.
