Sharing a cruise cabin is all part of the fun… until you realise you’re both trying to live in the same compact space for a week or two!

Even the best of friends, couples or family members can find themselves getting irritated over the smallest things. Thankfully, most onboard disagreements are easy to avoid with a little planning before you unpack.

Here are five of the most common cabin conflicts—and how to steer clear of them.

1. The Great Thermostat Debate

One of you is sleeping under the duvet because it’s freezing, while the other is still too warm!

Finding the perfect cabin temperature can be surprisingly difficult, especially in inside cabins where fresh air isn’t an option. It’s amazing how quickly the thermostat becomes the most fought-over feature in the room.

A good compromise is to agree on a comfortable temperature early on and ask your cabin steward for an extra blanket if one person tends to feel the cold. It’s much easier than secretly adjusting the controls every time your cabin mate isn’t looking!

2. Queueing for the Bathroom

Cruise ship bathrooms are cleverly designed, but they’re definitely not built for two people trying to get ready at the same time.

The biggest bottleneck usually happens before dinner or on formal nights, when everyone suddenly decides they need a shower, hairdryer and mirror all at once.

If you’re sharing a cabin, it helps to have a rough routine. Perhaps one person showers before breakfast while the other gets ready in the evening, or simply let each other know your plans each day. A few minutes of planning can save a lot of rushing—and possibly a missed dinner reservation.

3. Different Sleep Schedules

Not everyone cruises the same way.

One person might be ready for bed after the evening show, while the other wants “just one more drink” that somehow turns into karaoke and late-night pizza!

Then there are the bright phone screens, loud alarms, snoring, opening the curtains at sunrise… the list goes on.

Being considerate makes a huge difference. Use headphones if you’re watching TV, keep lights low if your cabin mate is asleep, and if you know you snore, it might be worth warning them beforehand!

4. The Cabin That Somehow Becomes a Tip

Cruise cabins always seem much bigger when you first walk in… until both suitcases are unpacked.

Shoes end up in the walkway, clothes appear on every chair, and chargers somehow multiply overnight.

One of the easiest ways to keep the peace is to unpack properly on the first day. Decide who gets which wardrobe and drawers, use the storage provided, and try not to let every available surface become a dumping ground.

A tidy cabin always feels much more spacious.

5. You Don’t Have to Spend Every Minute Together

Just because you’re sharing a cabin doesn’t mean you have to do absolutely everything together.

One person might love quizzes and game shows, while the other would rather relax with a coffee, enjoy the spa or spend a quiet afternoon reading on deck.

That’s completely normal.

Some of the best cruise holidays happen when everyone has the freedom to enjoy the activities they love before meeting up again later for dinner or an evening show.

A little independence often makes the time you do spend together even more enjoyable.

Final Thoughts

Most cabin disagreements aren’t really about the cabin—they’re simply about different routines and expectations. A quick chat before your holiday, a bit of compromise and a sense of humour will prevent most of the common issues.

As for me… I’ve found the simplest solution is to travel solo! That way I always get the wardrobe, the bathroom, the thermostat and the TV remote all to myself… and somehow there’s never anyone to argue with!
